Safety Training: Patient Moving & Handling QQI Level 6

This is a comprehensive 3 day course is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and understanding required to operate effectively in the design and delivery of Patient Moving Instruction. Safety Ireland is an approved QQI Provider which means we meet the highest standard of quality assured training & administration.  This high standard allows us to deliver the best quality training for providers and Instructors. This enables us to provide a complete service of training, assessment and support for Patient Moving & Handling Instructor Training.

This course is intended for people who wish to design and deliver courses containing the theory and practical skills and procedures in correct patient moving and handling.

Patient
Moving & Handling Instructor Course

Access

To access the course leading to this award the learner should have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence associated with the preceding level of this award where one exists. This may have been achieved through a formal qualification or through relevant life and work experience. Learners who have achieved the QQI /FETAC Level 6 Specific Purpose Certificate in Manual Handling Instruction may access programmes leading to this award. 

The Patient Moving & Handling training course can be completed in a day and is run in conjunction with our Manual Handling Course.  It covers a range of topics in order to give the learner confidence to risk assess Patient Moving & Manual Handling tasks and perform said tasks within their workplace.

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Ergonomics
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Biomechanics and Mechanism of Injury
  • Flexibility
  • Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
  • Principles of Lifting
  • Sitting Patient up in Bed
  • Turning patient in bed using sliding sheets
  • Moving patient up the bed using sliding sheets
  • Sitting Patient to edge of a bed
  • Standing patient
  • Transferring patient from bed to chair
  • Hazard Identification
  • Risk Assessment
  • Practical : Lifting, Moving, Carrying, Push and Pull
  • Mechanical Aids including wheelchair Push & Pull

  • Demonstration of Hoist

Course Format:

The course requires 3 days complete, including skills practice and assessment. While the main content of the course is general, each course is different in terms of learners, circumstance and requirements. There is an assessment with this course for certification.

In the classroom, students participate in simulated scenarios. Students work with an Instructor to complete skills practice.

Assessment:

  • 20% - Assignment
  • 60% - Skills Demonstration x2
  • 20% - Examination (Written Assessment)
  • All assessments are carried out in accordance with QQI / FETAC requirements and are both internally and externally authenticated before certification is issued. All participants have the right to appeal their results, the appeals procedure is also in accordance with QQI / FETAC Regulation. The examination is conducted by an independent instructor.

    All successful candidates in the written and practical exams will be awarded a FETAC/QQI level 6 certificate.

    Grading of the Exam is as Follows:

  • 50% -  64%   Pass
  • 65% -  79%   Merit
  • 80% - 100%  Distinction

    Booking For Groups/Companies:
    Just contact us and we will arrange an Instructor for your own location. All we need is a room suitable for the group size. This course is also available for bookings on weekends. This course can also be run for your group at our training centre in Terenure, Dublin. This course can be tailored for your group/company own needs.

    Places on the course are provided on a first come basis. If a course is full additional courses may be scheduled if there is adequate demand. Safety Ireland will at all times ensure equality in our service provision. We therefore ask any learner that has specific learning requirements to contact our office on 01-44 22 999 or at the time of booking the training and we will ensure that all possible measures are taken to meet requirements. English is the language that the training is provided in and participants must have a good understanding of the English language.  If participants prefer they are welcome to bring along an interpreter; however prior notice must be given to Safety Ireland First Response.
