This is a comprehensive 5 day FETAC level 6 certification course which covers all the essential aspects of the Occupational First Aid Instructor requirements as outlined in module D30185.

This is a comprehensive 5 day course designed to teach participants the core information to be able to organise and deliver the Health & Safety Authority recognised FETAC Occupational First Aid Course. Participants wishing to undergo Instructor training should have a good base knowledge and must have a First Aid or Medical background.

Safety Ireland is one of only a small number of Organisations and Companies in Ireland who have gained Approved Assessment Centre status under the FETAC Health & Safety Authority Regulations & Standards. This means we meet the highest standard of quality assured training, administration and monitoring to be approved by the Health & Safety Authority's agent,  as a provider of Occupational First Aid Instructor training and monitoring .

This high standard allows us to deliver the best quality training for providers and Instructors. This enables us to provide a complete service of training, assessment , monitoring and certification for Occupational First Aid and Instructor training.

This five day course covers a comprehensive range of topics to prepare the new Instructor to teach the qualified Occupational First Aider to administer emergency care in the workplace. Participants will learn a high level of practical skill and theoretical knowledge, so that they can deal competently with any situation that may arise in the working environment.

What Does This Course Offer
You will have the information and ability to present and run the FETAC Occupational First Aid Course.

• FETAC Occupational First Aid Course Plan for the Instructor.
• Cardiac First Response PHECC 2011 Education and Standard.
• First Aid, CPR, and AED Manual.
• All Course Participant Forms.
• Exam Assessment Sheets.

Monitoring & Mentoring
At the end of the 5 days training course each participant is required to attend a minimum of three Cardiac First Responder elements of the Occupational First Aid Course. This is to assist an Instructor on the first course, be supervised instructing on the second course and then to be assessed teaching on the third. We also recommend the new Instructors attend a few Occupational First Aid courses to watch fulltime Instructors teaching and we are able to assist with this due to the large number of courses we teach. Mentoring and full assistance is available to each participant who attends our Occupational First Aid Instructor training course.

Become two Instructors on the one course
After you have completed the three monitoring sessions as listed above you will be qualified as an Instructor.


-Cardiac First Response Community Level Instructor accredited by The Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC)
-You can then go forward and sit an assessment to become an Occupational First Aid Instructor.

Assessment for Occupational First Aid Instructor
After completing the Instructor training course and monitoring sessions, participants can then present themselves to the Health & Safety Authority's agent to be registered as an Occupational First Aid Instructor.

Duration: 5 days tuition plus monitoring sessions.
Certificate: PHECC Cardiac First Response Instructor.
Certificate Valid For: 5 years for Instructor.
2 years for PHECC Cardiac First Responder Instructor.
Accreditation: Recognised Training Health & Safety Authority

Course Programme

  • Unit 1: First Aid in the workplace – This Module covers the role of the occupational first aider, the legal requirements and how to effectively ensure the safety of the first aider in the work place
  • Unit 2: Patient Assessment – After this module, the candidate will be able to do a primary survey on a potential casualty. They will know how to take vitals (pulse, breathing, etc) signs and treat a casualty with a suspected neck injury.
  • Unit 3: Respiratory Emergencies – This module covers the functions of the respiratory system and shows the occupational First Aider how to manage a choking patient as well how to do mouth to mouth ventilations.
  • Unit 4: Cardiac first response – After this module the student will understand the chain of survival and will be able to activate their links, by calling for an ambulance, starting CPR and using a Defibrillator effectively.
  • Unit 5: Wounds and Bleeding – This module teaches the student how to deal with blood injuries. They will know how to recognise the different types of wounds and know how to treat them. They will be able to deal with head, eye and facial injuries as well as effectively minimizing the consequences of internal bleeding.
  • Unit 6: Altered levels of consciousness – The student learns how to treat shock and how to do the recovery position. This will allow them to treat a casualty who has reduced or lost consciousness.
  • Unit 7: Musculosketal injuries – At the end, the student will be able to treat patients who have fractured (broken) bones as well as deal effectively with casualties who have sprains, strains and dislocations.
  • Unit 8: Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock – this module covers the treatment of major and minor burns as well as the many different causes of burns. It also covers poisoning and how to treat someone who has been poised. The student will cover electrical shock and how to manage a patient who has been electrocuted.

Equality, Access, Transfer and Progression

Place on the course are provided on a first come basis. If a course is full additional courses may be scheduled if there is adequate demand. Safety Ireland will at all times ensure equality in our service provision. We therefore ask any learner that has specific learning requirements to contact our office on callsave 1850 555 999 or at the time of booking the training and we will ensure that all possible measure are taken to meet requirements. English is the language that the training in provided in and participants must have a good understanding of the English language, in the case where this is not so participants are permitted to bring an interpreter they may do so but prior notice must be give to Safety Ireland. This course is a modular course and each module has a specific timetable. Participants are not encouraged to attend later modules or exam days on alternative course, but we will try to accommodate participants that cannot complete the course due to circumstances beyond their control on an alternative/ later course. Successful candidates can progress to an Occupational First Aid Instructor level 6 certificate as this is the minimum standard for entry to this course.

FETAC Certification / Assessment

Participants complete a theoretical exam and skills assessments as per the following
Basic life savings skills 40%
Examination (short answer question) 30%
Skills demonstration x 2 30%

All assessments are carried out in accordance with FETAC requirements and are both internally and externally authenticated before certification is issued. All participants have the right to appeal their results, the appeals procedure is also in accordance with FETAC regulation. The examination is conducted by an independent instructor.

Grading of the exam is as follows

Pass 50% – 64%
Merit 65% – 79%
Distinction 80% – 100%
