Safety Training: Occupational First Aid Course - QQI Level 5

This is a comprehensive 3 day QQI / FETAC Level 5 Certification Course which covers all the essential aspects of the Occupational First Aid requirements as outlined in module 5N1207 and was introduced on 1 September 2008. The Occupational First Aid course now includes Cardiac First Responder training in automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and administering aspirin for heart attack patients.

The Occupational First Aid Regulations Safety, Health and Welfare at Work General Applications Regulations S.I. No. 299 of 2007. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, there is a requirement on employers based on a risk assessment to have a sufficient number of Occupational First Aiders trained and deployed in the workplace.

Occupational First Aid

All participants receive a comprehensive First Aid manual. The assessment is conducted by an independent Registered Occupational First Aid Instructor . The course consists of 8 units as listed below and includes Cardiac First Responder training in an Automated External Defibrillators (AED’S). Safety Ireland First Response is an OFAAA (Occupational First Aid Assessment Authority) Training Provider. Upon successful completion of the course and assessment, participants are presented with an Occupational First Aid Certificate, which is valid for two years.

    In the classroom, students participate in simulated scenarios. Students work with an Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council Instructor to complete skills practice.

    Course Format:

    The course requires 3 days complete, including skills practice and assessment. While the main content of the course is general, each course is different in terms of learners, circumstance and requirements. There is an assessment with this course for certification.


  • 40% - Basic Life Savings Skills
  • 40% - Skills Demonstration x2
  • 20% - Examination (Short Answer Questions)
  • All assessments are carried out in accordance with QQI / FETAC requirements and are both internally and externally authenticated before certification is issued. All participants have the right to appeal their results, the appeals procedure is also in accordance with QQI / FETAC Regulation. The examination is conducted by an independent instructor.

    All successful candidates in the written and practical exams will be awarded a FETAC/QQI level 5 certificate which is valid for 2 years.

    Grading of the Exam is as Follows:

  • 50% -  64%   Pass
  • 65% -  79%   Merit
  • 80% - 100%  Distinction

    There is no minimum age requirement set out in the current Education & Training Standards, however an individual should be mature enough to comprehend the knowledge, skills and implications associated with defibrillation and have a maturity to complete assessment to receive certification. Currently recognised institutions use 16 years of age as a benchmark.

    Booking For Groups/Companies:
    Just contact us and we will arrange an Instructor for your own location. All we need is a room suitable for the group size. This course is also available for bookings on weekends. This course can also be run for your group at our training centre in Terenure, Dublin. This course can be tailored for your group/company own needs.

    Places on the course are provided on a first come basis. If a course is full additional courses may be scheduled if there is adequate demand. Safety Ireland will at all times ensure equality in our service provision. We therefore ask any learner that has specific learning requirements to contact our office on 01-44 22 999 or at the time of booking the training and we will ensure that all possible measures are taken to meet requirements. English is the language that the training is provided in and participants must have a good understanding of the English language.  If participants prefer they are welcome to bring along an interpreter; however prior notice must be given to Safety Ireland First Response.
